Smell Gas? Leave, Then Call 911 or PSE

Natural gas escapes as a fire and explosion hazard. Utilities add mercaptan, so you often smell rotten eggs or sulfur.

Smell / Go / Tell (do this first)

Puget Sound Energy locked steps (Detect a Leak, Report Gas Emergency):

  1. Leave the area. Evacuate the building.
  2. From a safe distance, call 911 or PSE 1-888-225-5773.
  3. Do not use light switches, nearby landline phones, garage door openers, or anything that can spark.
  4. Do not hunt for the leak yourself.
  5. PSE dispatches for a safety check (utility states no charge for that check).

Other PSE signs: bubbles in puddles, dirt blowing from the ground, dead vegetation in odd spots, hissing or roaring.

Do not call a plumber instead of 911 or PSE. Utility first. Always.

After the utility clears the scene

A licensed plumber or gas-line contractor may then repair appliances, connectors, or interior piping. Hire only after the scene is safe.

Call a listed shop (after utility clears)

Call a listed shop from this directory. Phones are locked from the harvest. Confirm yourself before you hire.
