Tacoma side sewer repair: permits, bids and loans
The side sewer is the pipe that carries waste from your house toward the city main. When it fails, the City of Tacoma has a few firm rules worth knowing before you sign.
When you need a permit
- Any side sewer repair, on private property or in the right-of-way: permit required.
- Removing roots or clearing a clog: no permit.

Who can do the work
You can repair the portion on your own property yourself. Work in the street or alley right-of-way needs a licensed and bonded contractor. (S-205) If you hire out the private portion too, check the company on L&I Verify.
Getting it diagnosed
The City's tip sheet says to make sure a drain cleaner's snake cable can reach from your side sewer to the city main, which usually sits under the street or alley. Ask before they start. Then ask for a camera inspection, so you can see the break before anyone quotes digging.
Bids and money
Tacoma recommends getting three to five bids. It also offers low-interest Sewer Conservation Loans for side sewer work; Site Development takes calls at 253-591-5030. (S-205)
On a home job of $1,000 or more, a registered contractor must give you a signed Notice to Customer before work begins. (RCW 18.27.114) Ask for lien releases from suppliers on big jobs. (L&I)
